OBD-II fault code

P20AB: Reductant Injection Air Pressure Control Valve Stuck Closed

What it means

Reductant air-pressure control valve mechanically stuck closed — air supply blocked, dosing fails.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The air pressure control valve supplies compressed air used to atomise DEF during exhaust dosing. P20AB means the valve is behaving as though it remains closed when air is required, blocking the supply and preventing effective dosing.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Valve stuck closed
  2. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
  3. Component wear with age - mechanical play

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or NOx warning on
  • AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
  • Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare commanded valve state with live air-pressure readings to confirm that pressure fails to rise when the valve should open.
  2. Inspect the valve connector and wiring for damage or poor connections that could prevent the opening command from reaching the valve.
  3. Check the air supply lines and fittings for kinks or blockages that could prevent air reaching the valve.
  4. Inspect the valve for debris, deposits, or mechanical wear that could prevent it from opening, using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. Test valve actuation and air-pressure response against the manufacturer's specification to distinguish a stuck valve from an electrical or supply problem.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose or damaged valve connector or harness.
  • Clear a confirmed restriction in the air supply line.
  • Clean the valve if the manufacturer's procedure permits and debris is preventing it from opening.
  • Replace the air pressure control valve if it remains stuck closed or is mechanically worn.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid unnecessary driving: failed DEF dosing can increase NOx emissions, cause reduced-power operation, and lead to a restart countdown. Follow dashboard instructions and arrange repair promptly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
