OBD-II fault code

P207D: Intake Manifold Tuning (IMT) Valve Position Sensor/Switch Circuit High (Bank 2)

What it means

IMT position sensor at bank 2 reads above upper plausibility — open signal or short to B+. The intake manifold runner control (IMRC) flaps tune intake geometry for filling efficiency across the rpm range; stuck flaps cost part-load torque and can set lean codes.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Bank 2’s intake manifold tuning valve moves runner flaps to change airflow through that bank’s intake passages. The control module compares the bank 2 position sensor signal with the expected range as it commands the flaps. P207D sets when that signal stays above the plausible upper limit, which can result from an open signal path or a signal shorted toward battery voltage.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open signal line
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Possible reduced engine power or acceleration
  • Possible hesitation or rough running

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to record freeze-frame data and compare commanded and reported bank 2 IMT position, looking for a signal that remains implausibly high.
  2. Inspect the bank 2 IMT sensor connector and harness for corrosion, loose pins, damaged insulation, or contact with a power source.
  3. Check connector pin fit and continuity in the bank 2 sensor signal wire, since an open or high-resistance connection can distort the reading.
  4. With the circuit diagram, check whether the signal wire is shorted to battery power and verify the sensor supply and ground against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If wiring checks pass, test the bank 2 position sensor and confirm the IMT flaps move freely through their commanded range.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose bank 2 sensor connector terminals.
  • Repair an open or high-resistance section of the bank 2 signal wire.
  • Repair insulation damage where the signal wire contacts a battery-positive source.
  • Replace the bank 2 IMT position sensor if it fails testing.
  • Repair a sticking bank 2 runner mechanism if it prevents the sensor from tracking commanded movement.

Can I keep driving?

A short trip may be possible if the engine runs normally, but avoid hard acceleration because bank 2 may not tune its intake airflow correctly. Stop driving if power loss or rough running becomes severe.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
