OBD-II fault code

P207F: Reductant Quality Performance

What it means

The ECU has concluded that the AdBlue/DEF in the tank does not meet specification. Diagnosed by comparing expected NOx reduction against the dosed reductant volume — too much dosing for too little NOx drop indicates diluted or wrong fluid.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The reductant system injects AdBlue/DEF into the exhaust so the SCR catalyst can reduce nitrogen oxides. The control module assesses fluid quality by comparing the expected NOx reduction with the amount of reductant dosed. P207F sets when the measured reduction suggests the fluid is diluted, incorrect, or when a drifting NOx sensor makes the quality assessment unreliable.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. AdBlue diluted with water or wrong fluid filled
  2. NOx sensor drift gives false reductant-quality verdict

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or NOx warning on
  • AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
  • Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data, reductant-quality status, NOx readings, and any related SCR codes before clearing anything, since these show the conditions behind the quality decision.
  2. Check the tank label and recent refill history to confirm the fluid is the correct AdBlue/DEF and has not been contaminated or diluted.
  3. Inspect the reductant tank, filler area, lines, and electrical connectors for contamination, leaks, or damage that could affect dosing.
  4. Compare upstream and downstream NOx sensor readings and commanded reductant dosing under the conditions described by the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
  5. If the fluid and dosing system check out, test NOx sensor operation and SCR response using the manufacturer's procedure before replacing components.

Common fixes

  • Drain contaminated or incorrect reductant and refill with the specified AdBlue/DEF using clean equipment.
  • Repair a leaking or damaged reductant line or connector that affects dosing.
  • Correct a reductant injector or dosing fault confirmed by testing.
  • Replace a NOx sensor only if its readings fail the manufacturer's diagnostic checks.
  • Complete the manufacturer's SCR verification procedure after correcting the cause.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid extended driving and address the warning promptly: emissions control may be impaired, and some vehicles start a no-start countdown if the fault remains. Follow any displayed countdown or operating restriction.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
