OBD-II fault code

P2079: Intake Manifold Tuning (IMT) Valve Position Sensor/Switch Circuit Intermittent (Bank 1)

What it means

IMT position sensor at bank 1 signal is unstable — connector or harness issue. The intake manifold runner control (IMRC) flaps tune intake geometry for filling efficiency across the rpm range; stuck flaps cost part-load torque and can set lean codes.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The Bank 1 intake manifold tuning valve adjusts the intake path, and its position sensor provides feedback to the engine computer. P2079 sets when the sensor signal becomes unstable or drops in and out rather than remaining consistently within its expected range, often due to an intermittent connector or harness fault.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Intermittent connector
  2. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
  3. Harness routed against vibrating component

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Possible intermittent loss of engine performance
  • Possible hesitation or rough running

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and code history for the conditions when the Bank 1 IMT signal fault appeared, then monitor live position feedback for dropouts.
  2. Inspect the Bank 1 sensor connector and harness for loose terminals, corrosion, damaged insulation, or routing against a vibrating or hot part.
  3. With the engine off and using appropriate care, gently move the harness while monitoring the Bank 1 signal to see whether it cuts out.
  4. Check the Bank 1 signal, supply, and ground circuits for intermittent opens or shorts using the manufacturer's wiring test procedure.
  5. If the wiring remains stable, check the Bank 1 sensor and valve movement for intermittent sticking against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Secure the Bank 1 sensor connector and repair loose or corroded terminals.
  • Repair or replace a chafed Bank 1 harness section and secure it away from vibration or heat.
  • Clean or free a sticking Bank 1 tuning-valve mechanism if it causes intermittent feedback.
  • Replace the Bank 1 position sensor if its signal drops out with sound wiring.

Can I keep driving?

Driving may be possible while the engine runs normally, but stop somewhere safe if performance suddenly drops or the engine becomes difficult to control. An intermittent Bank 1 valve signal can cause unpredictable hesitation and increased emissions.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
