What it means
IMT valve position sensor at bank 1 reads in range but plausibility check fails — value sticks or does not match commanded position.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The Bank 1 intake manifold tuning valve changes the intake path, while its position sensor tells the engine computer where the valve is. P2076 sets when the sensor signal remains electrically plausible but its range, movement, or timing does not match the commanded Bank 1 valve position.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Position feedback sticks
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
- Sensor mounting loose - signal damping
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Possible reduced engine power or acceleration
- Possible hesitation or rough running
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame and live data for the Bank 1 commanded and actual IMT positions to see whether the feedback sticks or lags.
- Inspect the Bank 1 sensor mounting, connector, and harness for looseness, corrosion, or damage that could damp or interrupt the signal.
- Check that the Bank 1 tuning-valve linkage and flap move freely through their operating travel without carbon-related binding.
- Use scan-tool controls, if available for the vehicle, to observe whether Bank 1 position feedback changes smoothly as the valve is commanded to move.
- Test the Bank 1 sensor signal and mechanical response against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Secure a loose Bank 1 position-sensor mounting or connector.
- Clean or repair a binding Bank 1 tuning-valve mechanism where appropriate.
- Repair damaged wiring or corroded terminals in the Bank 1 sensor circuit.
- Replace the Bank 1 position sensor if its feedback remains outside specification.
Can I keep driving?
If there is no severe hesitation or power loss, gentle driving may be possible while arranging diagnosis. Avoid hard acceleration if the Bank 1 valve does not follow commands, since engine response and emissions can worsen.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
