OBD-II fault code

P2073: Manifold Absolute Pressure/Mass Air Flow - Throttle Position Correlation at Idle

What it means

At idle, the relationship between MAP/MAF and throttle position does not match the calibrated map — typically a vacuum leak, dirty MAF, sticking throttle plate, or sensor drift.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

At idle, the engine computer compares throttle position with airflow measured by the MAF sensor and intake pressure measured by the MAP sensor. P2073 sets when those readings do not agree with the calibrated idle relationship, which can happen if unmetered air enters the intake or a sensor or throttle plate reports airflow incorrectly.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Vacuum leak — cracked hose, gasket, or PCV
  2. MAF sensor contaminated
  3. Carbon buildup at throttle plate

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss, hesitation under acceleration
  • Rough or unstable idle
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Possible difficulty starting

How to diagnose it

  1. Check the stored freeze-frame and live MAP, MAF, and throttle-position readings at idle to see which value is inconsistent and under what conditions.
  2. Inspect intake ducts, vacuum hoses, manifold joints, and the PCV system for cracks or leaks that could admit air after the MAF.
  3. Check the air filter and MAF sensing element for contamination or restriction, and clean the MAF only with suitable sensor cleaner if appropriate.
  4. Inspect the throttle plate for carbon buildup or sticking, and check that it moves smoothly as commanded.
  5. If the readings still disagree, test the MAP, MAF, and throttle-position circuits and sensor response against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Repair a cracked vacuum hose, PCV connection, or intake gasket leak.
  • Clean a contaminated MAF sensor using suitable sensor cleaner.
  • Clean carbon from the throttle plate using an appropriate procedure.
  • Repair damaged sensor wiring or replace a sensor that fails its specification tests.

Can I keep driving?

Short trips to a repair location may be possible if the engine runs steadily, but avoid hard acceleration if it hesitates or loses power. A rough or unstable idle can lead to stalling, and the fault can increase fuel use and emissions.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
