OBD-II fault code

P2072: Throttle Actuator Control System - Ice Blockage

What it means

The control module has detected an ice blockage affecting the throttle actuator system. This can restrict throttle operation, especially in cold, humid conditions.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The throttle actuator system uses an electronically controlled throttle to regulate airflow into the engine. P2072 sets when ice blocks or interferes with throttle operation, a condition more likely in cold, humid weather; restricted movement can lead the module to limit engine response.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Ice formed in throttle body
  2. Throttle housing coolant warming circuit blocked

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Reduced throttle response, possible limp mode
  • Hesitation or surging
  • Idle too high or too low

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and weather or intake conditions when the fault occurred, and review throttle command and position data for restricted or mismatched movement.
  2. Inspect the throttle body exterior and intake for moisture or ice, without forcing the throttle plate by hand.
  3. Check the throttle housing’s coolant warming circuit and hoses for leaks, kinks, or blockage that could prevent warming.
  4. After the vehicle and intake have safely thawed, clear the code and monitor throttle operation to see whether the fault returns under similar conditions.
  5. If the code returns, test the throttle actuator and its wiring using the manufacturer’s procedure to rule out an electrical or mechanical fault unrelated to ice.

Common fixes

  • Allow the throttle body and intake to thaw safely; do not chip ice from the throttle plate.
  • Restore coolant flow through a blocked or kinked throttle housing warming circuit.
  • Repair a coolant hose leak or connection affecting throttle body warming.
  • Repair a confirmed throttle actuator wiring fault or replace a faulty actuator if the fault persists after thawing.

Can I keep driving?

If throttle response is reduced, surges, or becomes unpredictable, pull over safely and avoid continuing in traffic; use roadside assistance if normal control does not return. Ice-related restriction can worsen quickly, and limited throttle may leave you unable to accelerate when needed.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
