OBD-II fault code

P2071: Intake Manifold Tuning (IMT) Valve Stuck Closed (Bank 1)

What it means

Intake Manifold Tuning (IMT) Valve Stuck Closed (Bank 1): the control module has detected this fault condition.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The intake manifold tuning valve on bank 1 changes the intake path to suit engine operating conditions. The control module monitors whether the valve follows its command; P2071 sets when the bank 1 valve remains closed when it should open.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Carbon buildup
  2. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
  3. Component wear with age - mechanical play

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Possible reduced engine power or acceleration
  • Possible hesitation or rough running

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame and live IMT command or position data, if available, to confirm bank 1 was commanded to open when the fault occurred.
  2. Identify bank 1 using the vehicle’s service information and inspect its actuator, linkage, and connector for damage or disconnection.
  3. Check the bank 1 flap for carbon or debris that blocks opening, and inspect for binding or excessive mechanical play.
  4. Command the bank 1 valve with a scan tool if supported and compare actual movement with position feedback.
  5. Test the bank 1 actuator circuit and valve travel using the manufacturer’s procedure to determine whether the fault is electrical or mechanical.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or secure a loose bank 1 actuator connector.
  • Remove carbon or debris blocking the bank 1 flap, following the vehicle maker’s procedure.
  • Repair worn or damaged bank 1 linkage that prevents the valve from opening.
  • Replace the seized bank 1 actuator or valve assembly if it fails the circuit and movement checks.

Can I keep driving?

A short drive may be possible if the engine runs normally, but restricted intake flow can cause hesitation or reduced acceleration. Avoid demanding driving and stop if the engine runs badly or loses significant power.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
