OBD-II fault code

P206F: Intake Manifold Tuning (IMT) Valve Stuck Closed (Bank 2)

What it means

Intake Manifold Tuning (IMT) Valve Stuck Closed (Bank 2): the control module has detected this fault condition.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The intake manifold tuning valve on bank 2 adjusts the intake path to suit engine operating conditions. The control module monitors commanded movement and feedback; P206F sets when the bank 2 valve stays closed instead of opening when required.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Carbon buildup blocks flap travel
  2. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
  3. Component wear with age - mechanical play

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Possible reduced engine power or acceleration
  • Possible hesitation or rough running

How to diagnose it

  1. Use freeze-frame and live IMT command or position data, if available, to confirm that the fault is on bank 2 and the valve is being asked to open.
  2. Identify bank 2 from the vehicle’s service information and inspect its actuator, linkage, and connector for damage or disconnection.
  3. Check the bank 2 flap for carbon or debris that could prevent it from opening, and look for excessive play or mechanical wear.
  4. Command the valve with a scan tool if supported, and compare actuator movement with the module’s position feedback.
  5. Test the bank 2 actuator circuit and mechanical travel according to the manufacturer’s procedure to separate an electrical fault from a stuck valve.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or repair a loose bank 2 IMT actuator connector.
  • Clean an obstruction preventing the bank 2 flap from opening, following the vehicle maker’s procedure.
  • Repair worn or damaged bank 2 linkage that prevents full travel.
  • Replace the seized bank 2 actuator or valve assembly if it remains stuck after cleaning and circuit checks.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle runs normally, a short trip for diagnosis may be manageable, but restricted airflow can reduce power or cause hesitation. Avoid demanding acceleration and stop if the engine becomes very rough or loses substantial power.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
