OBD-II fault code

P205F: Reductant System Performance (Bank 2)

What it means

The reductant system performance for Bank 2 is below the expected level. The code does not by itself identify the cause or a particular driver warning or vehicle response.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system injects DEF/AdBlue into the exhaust to help the catalyst reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx). The control module evaluates how effectively the Bank 2 reductant system is working, using available sensor feedback. It sets P205F when Bank 2 performance falls below the expected level; the code alone does not identify whether the DEF, dosing path or catalyst is at fault.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Poor DEF quality — diluted or contaminated
  2. SCR catalyst thermally aged
  3. Crystallisation restricts dosing line

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or NOx warning on
  • AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
  • Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and related SCR or NOx codes to see when the Bank 2 performance fault occurred and whether other faults may explain it.
  2. Check the DEF level and inspect the fluid for age, dilution or contamination, following the vehicle maker’s guidance for confirming fluid quality.
  3. Inspect Bank 2 reductant lines and injector for DEF crystals, leaks, damage or restricted flow.
  4. Use scan-tool data to compare relevant Bank 2 NOx readings and reductant dosing behavior with the other bank, if the vehicle provides those values.
  5. If the fluid and dosing path check out, assess Bank 2 SCR catalyst efficiency using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Replace contaminated or out-of-spec DEF with fluid meeting the vehicle's requirements.
  • Clear crystallised deposits and repair or replace a restricted Bank 2 dosing line.
  • Repair or replace a faulty Bank 2 reductant injector if testing confirms it is not dosing correctly.
  • Replace the Bank 2 SCR catalyst if testing confirms thermal ageing or reduced conversion efficiency.

Can I keep driving?

You can usually drive cautiously if the vehicle runs normally, but address the warning promptly and avoid unnecessary trips. Continued poor NOx control can fail an emissions inspection, and some vehicles may start a no-start countdown if the fault remains.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
