What it means
The SCR (selective catalytic reduction) system using AdBlue/DEF is not delivering the expected NOx conversion. Causes range from poor reductant quality, dosing module faults, heater failure on the AdBlue tank in cold weather, or a degraded SCR catalyst.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The SCR system injects DEF/AdBlue into the exhaust to reduce NOx, and the control module evaluates whether the system is achieving the expected conversion on Bank 1. P204F sets when monitored SCR performance falls short; poor reductant quality, inadequate dosing, cold-weather heating problems, or a degraded catalyst can all contribute.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Poor reductant quality or contamination
- Dosing module clogged with urea crystals
- SCR catalyst aged or contaminated
Symptoms
- Check engine light or NOx warning on
- AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
- Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
- Failed emissions inspection (NOx)
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and review SCR, NOx-sensor, reductant-quality, and dosing data to see when Bank 1 conversion fell below expectation.
- Check DEF level and condition, and confirm that the fluid is the correct uncontaminated reductant using the vehicle's specified test method.
- Inspect Bank 1 dosing hardware and its connector for leaks, crystallized DEF, blockage, or wiring damage, and check for related dosing or heater codes.
- Use the scan tool's supported tests to confirm reductant pressure and commanded dosing, and verify tank or line heating operation if the fault occurred in cold conditions.
- Evaluate upstream and downstream NOx readings and exhaust leaks using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure to separate dosing faults from sensor or catalyst problems.
- Test SCR catalyst performance only after fluid quality, dosing, heaters, and NOx-sensor data have been checked.
Common fixes
- Correct low or contaminated DEF by replenishing or servicing the system as specified.
- Clean or replace a confirmed crystallized or restricted dosing component and repair its wiring as needed.
- Repair a failed reductant tank or line heater when testing confirms it is preventing proper operation.
- Replace a faulty NOx sensor or other confirmed control component.
- Replace the Bank 1 SCR catalyst only after dosing and sensor checks confirm catalyst performance is inadequate.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid long trips and heavy loads if the vehicle has reduced power or an SCR countdown, and arrange diagnosis promptly. Continued operation can leave NOx emissions uncontrolled and may progress to a restart restriction.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
