OBD-II fault code

P2050: Reductant Injection Valve Circuit/Open (Bank 2 Unit 1)

What it means

Reductant Injection Valve Circuit/Open (Bank 2 Unit 1): the circuit is open. This valve doses reductant (DEF/AdBlue) into the exhaust for SCR NOx reduction.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The Bank 2 Unit 1 reductant injection valve meters DEF/AdBlue into the exhaust for SCR NOx reduction. P2050 sets when the control module detects an open electrical path in that valve's circuit, so it cannot reliably energize the injector.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Solenoid winding open
  2. Pin pushed back out of connector body
  3. Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or NOx warning on
  • AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
  • Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and scan for related reductant dosing faults, then confirm whether Bank 2 Unit 1 is commanded during a supported actuator test.
  2. Inspect the Bank 2 Unit 1 injector connector for a backed-out pin, corrosion, poor fit, or damaged wiring near the hot exhaust.
  3. Check the valve winding and its connector terminals for an open circuit using the manufacturer's procedure and specification.
  4. Test continuity through the valve control and supply wiring to the relevant module, and check for opens or loose terminal contact while moving the harness.
  5. If the valve and harness test correctly, diagnose the driver circuit or module using the vehicle's service information before replacing parts.
  6. After repair, run the supported dosing test and confirm the Bank 2 Unit 1 circuit operates without returning the code.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect a loose Bank 2 Unit 1 injector connector or repair a backed-out terminal.
  • Repair an open or damaged wire in the Bank 2 Unit 1 valve circuit.
  • Replace the Bank 2 Unit 1 reductant injection valve if its winding is open.
  • Repair a confirmed module driver fault and verify operation with an actuator test.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle drives normally, limit use and arrange repair soon; the affected injector may not dose reductant, reducing NOx control. Watch for an SCR warning or no-start countdown, which can be triggered after the fault remains unresolved.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
