OBD-II fault code

P2032: Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Circuit Low (Bank 1 Sensor 2)

What it means

The EGT sensor at bank 1 position 2 reads below the lower limit. Common when the signal is shorted to ground or the sensor element is open.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The Bank 1 Sensor 2 exhaust gas temperature sensor sends the control module a signal representing exhaust temperature at its installed position. The module monitors that signal for a value below the circuit's expected range. P2032 sets when the Bank 1 Sensor 2 signal is too low, which can result from a grounded signal circuit or a sensor fault.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to ground
  2. Sensor element open
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Possible reduced engine performance
  • Possible emissions-control or exhaust-system warning

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and compare live Bank 1 Sensor 2 temperature with other EGT readings, especially before startup when exhaust temperatures should be similar.
  2. Locate Bank 1 Sensor 2 from service information and inspect its heat-exposed harness for rubbed insulation or a signal wire touching ground.
  3. Inspect the connector for corrosion, bent pins, or poor terminal contact that could pull down the sensor signal.
  4. Test the Bank 1 Sensor 2 signal wire for a short to ground and check circuit continuity using the vehicle wiring diagram.
  5. Test the sensor element and its circuit against the manufacturer's specification to distinguish an open sensor element from a wiring fault.
  6. Repair the fault, clear the code, and confirm that the sensor reading responds plausibly as the exhaust warms.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose Bank 1 Sensor 2 connector terminals.
  • Repair a signal wire shorted to ground or chafed through its insulation.
  • Replace the Bank 1 Sensor 2 EGT sensor if its element fails the specified test.
  • Repair a damaged section of the sensor harness.

Can I keep driving?

You may be able to drive, but the control module may not have reliable Bank 1 Sensor 2 temperature data for emissions control. If the vehicle reduces performance or shows an exhaust warning, avoid heavy loads and arrange repair promptly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
