OBD-II fault code

P2035: Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Circuit Low (Bank 2 Sensor 2)

What it means

The EGT sensor on bank 2 sensor 2 reads below the lower plausibility limit — short to ground or shorted sensor element.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The Bank 2 Sensor 2 exhaust gas temperature sensor sends the control module a signal for exhaust temperature at its installed position. The module checks the signal against a lower electrical plausibility limit. P2035 sets when the Bank 2 Sensor 2 signal is too low, commonly due to a grounded signal circuit or sensor fault.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal shorted to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Possible reduced engine performance
  • Possible emissions-control or exhaust-system warning

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and compare live Bank 2 Sensor 2 temperature with other EGT readings, including when the exhaust is cold.
  2. Locate Bank 2 Sensor 2 using service information and inspect the harness for chafing or insulation worn through near hot exhaust parts.
  3. Inspect the connector for corrosion, damaged pins, or poor contact that could pull the signal low.
  4. Test the Bank 2 Sensor 2 signal wire for a short to ground and check continuity in the circuit using the wiring diagram.
  5. Test the sensor element and circuit against the manufacturer's specification to identify whether the sensor or harness is responsible.
  6. After repair, clear the code and verify that Bank 2 Sensor 2 temperature responds plausibly as the exhaust warms.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose Bank 2 Sensor 2 connector terminals.
  • Repair the Bank 2 Sensor 2 signal wire if it is shorted to ground or chafed.
  • Replace the Bank 2 Sensor 2 EGT sensor if it fails the specified test.
  • Repair damaged harness insulation or terminals in the sensor circuit.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle may remain drivable, but the control module may lack reliable Bank 2 Sensor 2 temperature data for emissions management. If an exhaust warning or reduced performance appears, avoid heavy loads and arrange repair soon.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
