What it means
Internal self-diagnostics of the IMRC actuator on bank 1 report an off-spec condition — driver stage, position-feedback or thermal limit no longer matches the calibrated profile.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The bank 1 IMRC actuator contains the motor and feedback or driver electronics that position the intake runners. Its internal diagnostics monitor whether those components operate within their calibrated limits; P201D sets when the actuator reports an internal performance problem, such as a driver, feedback, or thermal fault.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Actuator internal driver or sensor fault
- Actuator overheated and derated
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Reduced engine power or sluggish acceleration
- Hesitation or uneven engine response
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and any actuator-specific live data or related IMRC codes before clearing anything.
- Inspect the bank 1 actuator connector and harness for poor contact, corrosion, heat damage, or a short that could mimic an internal fault.
- Check that the bank 1 runner linkage moves freely and is not forcing the actuator to work against a stuck flap.
- Command bank 1 runner movement with a scan tool and observe the actuator feedback and any internal status indications as it operates.
- Test the actuator supply, ground, and feedback circuit to the manufacturer's specification; replace the actuator only if external causes are ruled out and its internal fault remains.
Common fixes
- Repair a damaged or poorly connected bank 1 actuator connector or harness found during inspection.
- Free a binding bank 1 runner linkage if it is overloading the actuator.
- Correct a confirmed power or ground fault at the bank 1 actuator.
- Replace the bank 1 IMRC actuator if its internal driver, feedback, or thermal diagnostics fail after circuit checks.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine is smooth, a cautious short drive is usually possible, though reduced power or hesitation can make acceleration less dependable. Avoid hard acceleration and get the actuator fault checked soon because bank 1 airflow control and emissions may be affected.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
