OBD-II fault code

P0ECA: Hybrid/EV Battery Temperature Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The battery temperature sensors do not agree with one another as expected. The module sets this code when readings from multiple sensors differ beyond the allowed correlation range.

How it works

The hybrid or EV battery management system reads multiple pack temperature sensors to track heat distribution and protect the battery. P0ECA sets when those sensor readings disagree beyond the permitted correlation range, which may reflect a bad sensor or connection, damaged wiring, or an actual uneven temperature caused by a cooling problem.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. One or more faulty temperature sensors
  2. Loose or corroded sensor connectors
  3. Damaged sensor wiring
  4. Uneven battery temperature from a cooling fault

Symptoms

  • Hybrid or EV warning light
  • Reduced power
  • Charging may be limited
  • Battery temperature readings may appear inconsistent

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare all available battery temperature readings with ambient conditions and with one another.
  2. Inspect accessible temperature-sensor connectors and harness sections for looseness, corrosion, pin damage, or chafing, without opening the high-voltage battery.
  3. Check whether cooling airflow or coolant-system warnings and live data point to uneven battery cooling.
  4. Test the suspect sensor circuits and sensor readings using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure and specifications.
  5. If sensor circuits are sound, have the battery cooling system and pack temperature distribution assessed with the vehicle's specified high-voltage safety procedures.

Common fixes

  • Secure or clean a loose or corroded sensor connector.
  • Repair damaged temperature-sensor wiring.
  • Restore battery cooling airflow or repair the identified cooling fault.
  • Replace a temperature sensor that fails the manufacturer's test.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid hard acceleration, heavy loads, and charging if the vehicle limits power or charging; continued use with a genuine hot spot can worsen battery damage. If a hybrid or EV warning appears or power is reduced, stop safely and follow the vehicle's instructions.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
