OBD-II fault code

P0E70: Battery Charging System Precharge Contactor Control Circuit High

What it means

The control module detects voltage above the expected range in the battery charging system precharge contactor control circuit. The effect on vehicle operation depends on the vehicle.

How it works

The precharge contactor control circuit switches the contactor that prepares the high-voltage system before the main contactors close. P0E70 means the module detects voltage above the circuit's expected range. A short to voltage, a connector fault, a defective coil, or a failed driver can hold the signal high.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Short to voltage in the control wiring
  2. Faulty precharge contactor or coil
  3. Corroded or loose connector
  4. Failed control module driver

Symptoms

  • Hybrid or EV warning light
  • Vehicle may not enter READY mode
  • Charging or starting may be disabled
  • Reduced power

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check live precharge command and feedback to see when the control circuit reads high.
  2. With the high-voltage system safely powered down, inspect the precharge circuit harness and connector for chafing, water entry, loose pins, or corrosion.
  3. Follow the wiring diagram to test the control wire for a short to voltage and check connector continuity.
  4. Test the contactor coil and circuit against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the wiring and contactor pass, compare scan-tool commands with circuit response and assess the control module driver using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair a control wire shorted to voltage.
  • Repair or clean a loose or corroded connector.
  • Replace a precharge contactor that fails its coil or functional test.
  • Repair or replace a failed driver only after excluding wiring and contactor faults.

Can I keep driving?

Do not rely on the vehicle if it cannot enter Ready mode or charging is disabled. If it is driveable, limit use because the fault can lead to reduced power or loss of propulsion.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
