OBD-II fault code

P0E6D: Battery Charging System Precharge Contactor Control Circuit/Open

What it means

The control module monitors the command and electrical circuit for the high-voltage battery precharge contactor. It sets this code when the circuit is open or the module cannot establish the expected control response.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The precharge contactor and resistor bring the drive system's high-voltage capacitors up to battery voltage before the main contactors close. The control module sets P0E6D when the precharge contactor control circuit is open or its expected response cannot be established. An open resistor or a contactor that does not switch can interrupt this sequence.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Precharge resistor open
  2. Contactor contacts welded
  3. Pack cell imbalance approaching service threshold

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and use a scan tool to check precharge commands, circuit status, and related battery or contactor codes.
  2. With the vehicle safely powered down, inspect the precharge contactor, resistor connections, and harness for loose plugs, corrosion, or damage.
  3. Check the precharge resistor and contactor coil for continuity against the manufacturer's specification.
  4. Use the wiring diagram to check the control circuit for an open and verify connector and ground integrity.
  5. If the circuit tests correctly, assess whether the contactor contacts are welded using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure, and review battery balance data if related codes are present.

Common fixes

  • Restore a loose or corroded connection in the precharge circuit.
  • Repair an open in the precharge control wiring.
  • Replace an open precharge resistor.
  • Replace a contactor with welded contacts after confirming the fault using the specified procedure.
  • Address battery cell imbalance only when scan data and the manufacturer's diagnostics identify it as a cause.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle will not enter Ready mode, do not drive it; arrange recovery. If it still operates, limit use because precharge failure can disable propulsion or charging without warning.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
