OBD-II fault code

P0E6E: Battery Charging System Precharge Contactor Control Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The control module detects that the precharge contactor control circuit is operating outside its expected range or performance. The effect on vehicle operation depends on the vehicle.

How it works

The precharge contactor circuit controls the connection that charges the drive system's high-voltage capacitors before normal operation. P0E6E means the control module sees circuit behavior outside the expected range or timing during precharge. A faulty contactor, damaged wiring, a driver fault, or another high-voltage problem can cause this performance mismatch.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Faulty precharge contactor
  2. Damaged wiring or poor connection
  3. Contactor driver circuit fault
  4. High-voltage circuit fault
  5. Charging system control module fault

Symptoms

  • Charging system warning
  • Vehicle may not enter Ready mode
  • Charging may be disabled
  • Reduced power or limited operation

How to diagnose it

  1. Capture freeze-frame data and check scan-tool precharge commands, contactor feedback, and related high-voltage codes.
  2. Inspect the precharge contactor connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, loose terminals, or signs of moisture with the vehicle safely powered down.
  3. Check the contactor and its control circuit for continuity and connection quality against the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
  4. Compare commanded and actual precharge behavior with scan data to determine whether the mismatch follows the contactor circuit.
  5. If the contactor and wiring pass, follow the manufacturer's procedure to evaluate the driver circuit, high-voltage system, and charging system control module.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged or poorly connected precharge circuit wiring.
  • Clean or repair corroded or loose connector terminals.
  • Replace a precharge contactor that fails its specified electrical or functional test.
  • Repair a failed contactor driver or replace the control module only after wiring and contactor checks pass.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle will not enter Ready mode or charging is disabled, avoid depending on it for a trip. Stop driving if power becomes limited enough to make traffic operation unsafe.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
