What it means
The cell balancing circuit N reports a range/performance condition. Cell-group voltage equalization may be impaired on this channel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Battery management uses balancing channel N to bring its cell group closer in charge to the other groups. This code sets when channel N operates outside the expected range or response, even though the fault is not specifically identified as stuck on or stuck off.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Balancing circuit or wiring fault
- BMS driver fault
- Cell-voltage or temperature condition affecting balancing
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and BMS codes, then compare channel N's commanded state, reported response, and cell-group voltage change with other groups.
- Inspect channel N harness sections and connectors, with the vehicle powered down according to service instructions, for loose pins, corrosion, opens, or shorts.
- Test channel N wiring for continuity and shorts, and check that its signal follows commands within the manufacturer's criteria.
- Review channel N cell voltage and temperature data for conditions that could limit or change balancing behavior.
- If wiring and cell conditions are acceptable, test the channel N balancing component and BMS driver using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair channel N wiring or connector faults that cause an abnormal response.
- Address a cell-voltage or temperature condition that the manufacturer identifies as affecting balancing.
- Replace a channel N balancing component that fails its performance test.
- Repair or replace the BMS driver if its channel N output is outside specification.
Can I keep driving?
Drive only as needed and avoid demanding acceleration or long trips if power is limited or battery warnings are present. A persistent channel N performance fault can allow cell imbalance to grow and may lead to restricted charging or limp mode.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
