What it means
The cell balancing circuit L reports a range/performance condition. Cell-group voltage equalization may be impaired on this channel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Balancing circuit L manages equalization for its assigned battery cell group. The battery management system checks that the channel responds within the expected range when balancing is requested. This code sets when the L circuit’s response or related cell-group readings are outside that range, rather than indicating a specific stuck-on or stuck-off state.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Balancing circuit or wiring fault
- BMS driver fault
- Cell-voltage or temperature condition affecting balancing
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and inspect live L-channel command, cell-group voltage, and temperature readings to identify the conditions associated with the fault.
- Compare the L group’s voltage and temperature with neighbouring groups during conditions when balancing is permitted.
- Inspect the L balancing connector and wiring for loose terminals, corrosion, chafing, or damage that could make performance inconsistent.
- Test the L circuit and driver wiring for intermittent opens, shorts, or poor connections according to the manufacturer's procedure and specification.
- If the wiring checks pass, evaluate the L balancing component and battery management system driver while checking for a cell-voltage or temperature condition affecting operation.
Common fixes
- Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged L-channel wire or connector.
- Replace a faulty L balancing component when testing identifies it.
- Repair or replace a battery management system driver confirmed to be defective.
- Correct a confirmed cell-voltage or temperature issue that prevents expected balancing.
Can I keep driving?
Power, charging, or electric range may be limited, so keep driving conservative until the fault is diagnosed. If charging fails, power drops sharply, or limp mode occurs, stop safely and arrange service; ongoing operation can worsen cell-group imbalance.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
