OBD-II fault code

P0DCC: Hybrid/EV Battery Cell Balancing Circuit I

What it means

The cell balancing circuit I reports a generic fault. Cell-group voltage equalization may be impaired on this channel.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The battery management system uses circuit I to balance the voltage of a particular battery cell group by controlling a balancing path. It monitors the circuit and cell data for that channel; P0DCC sets when it detects a fault but does not identify a specific stuck-on or stuck-off condition.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open or short in the cell-balancing circuit wiring or connector
  2. Failed balancing component or BMS driver
  3. Cell-voltage or temperature condition preventing balancing

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check live cell-group voltages, temperatures, and balancing status for circuit I to see whether balancing was requested or inhibited.
  2. Check the manufacturer’s diagnostic information to identify which cell group and connections are assigned to circuit I on this vehicle.
  3. With the vehicle made safe according to the manufacturer’s high-voltage procedures, inspect circuit I connectors and wiring for looseness, corrosion, damage, or signs of a short.
  4. Check for related cell-voltage or temperature faults that could prevent balancing on circuit I before condemning its hardware.
  5. Test circuit I wiring and balancing components using the manufacturer’s specified procedure, then assess the BMS driver if the wiring and components pass.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose, corroded, open, or shorted circuit I connection or wire.
  • Correct a cell-voltage or temperature issue that is inhibiting circuit I balancing, if confirmed by diagnosis.
  • Replace a failed circuit I balancing component if testing confirms it.
  • Repair or replace the BMS driver only after circuit I wiring and components test correctly.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid relying on the vehicle’s full electric range or power, and do not continue driving if it enters limp mode or displays a serious hybrid/EV warning. A balancing fault can worsen cell-group imbalance and lead to charging limits or loss of propulsion.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
