OBD-II fault code

P0DB4: Hybrid/EV Battery Cell Balancing Circuit C

What it means

The cell balancing circuit C reports a generic fault. Cell-group voltage equalization may be impaired on this channel.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Battery balancing circuit C serves cell groups assigned to that channel, separate from circuits A and B. The battery management system monitors circuit C and those groups' voltage behavior; P0DB4 indicates a general C-channel fault but does not identify a specific stuck state or performance failure.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Balancing circuit failed
  2. Severe cell imbalance
  3. Ground point with elevated resistance

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and battery-management codes, noting which cell groups circuit C covers and what status was recorded when the code set.
  2. Compare the C-assigned cell-group voltages with neighboring groups and with the readings for circuits A and B to identify a C-specific pattern.
  3. With the vehicle powered down according to the manufacturer's procedure, inspect accessible circuit C wiring, connectors, and ground points for corrosion, looseness, or damage.
  4. Have a qualified technician test circuit C wiring and its ground connection against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the external circuit passes, have the pack and battery management system checked for a failed C balancing circuit or cell-group imbalance.

Common fixes

  • Repair a damaged or loose circuit C connector or harness.
  • Clean and secure a circuit C ground connection that fails inspection or testing.
  • Replace a circuit C balancing component confirmed to have failed.
  • Repair an internal pack or battery-management fault only after diagnosis identifies it.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving and avoid heavy acceleration or long journeys while circuit C is unresolved, because the vehicle may reduce power or restrict charging. Stop safely if a serious battery warning appears or the vehicle enters limp mode, and do not access high-voltage components.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
