OBD-II fault code

P0DC4: Hybrid/EV Battery Cell Balancing Circuit G

What it means

The cell balancing circuit G reports a generic fault. Cell-group voltage equalization may be impaired on this channel.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Balancing circuit G is the BMS-controlled path that helps equalize charge in its assigned cell group. The BMS monitors the G channel’s electrical response and balancing operation; this code sets when it detects a general fault on that channel, without identifying a stuck-on, stuck-off, or range condition.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open or short in the cell-balancing circuit wiring or connector
  2. Failed balancing component or BMS driver
  3. Cell-voltage or temperature condition preventing balancing

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and read live cell-group voltages, temperatures, and balancing status to establish when the G-channel fault appeared.
  2. Compare the G group’s voltage and temperature with other groups to check for conditions that could block balancing.
  3. With the high-voltage system made safe according to the vehicle’s procedure, inspect G-channel wiring and connectors for opens, shorts, corrosion, or loose contacts.
  4. Test the G balancing path and switching component using the manufacturer’s procedure and specification.
  5. If wiring and the balancing component pass, check the BMS driver and the G group’s voltage and temperature inputs.

Common fixes

  • Secure or clean a poor circuit G connector.
  • Repair open, shorted, or damaged G-channel wiring.
  • Replace a failed G balancing component if confirmed by testing.
  • Repair or replace the BMS if its G-channel driver is faulty.

Can I keep driving?

Power, charging, or electric range may be limited while the G balancing channel is faulty. Avoid demanding driving and stop if the vehicle enters limp mode or displays a battery warning; arrange prompt high-voltage system diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
