OBD-II fault code

P0DB2: Hybrid/EV Battery Cell Balancing Circuit B Stuck Off

What it means

The cell balancing circuit B reports a stuck off condition. Cell-group voltage equalization may be impaired on this channel.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Circuit B balances its assigned battery cell groups through switches controlled by the battery management system. P0DB2 sets when the system requests balancing on circuit B but detects no expected activity, leaving those groups without the intended equalization.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Balancing switch or circuit open
  2. Battery pack or BMS internal fault
  3. Wiring or connector fault

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and battery-management codes, then check whether circuit B was commanded on and reported inactive.
  2. Compare cell-group voltage trends assigned to circuit B with other groups during charging or a supported balancing test.
  3. With the vehicle powered down per the manufacturer's procedure, inspect accessible circuit B wiring and connectors for an open, loose terminal, corrosion, or physical damage.
  4. Have a qualified technician test circuit B continuity and connections against the manufacturer's specification to locate an open path.
  5. If the wiring passes, have the battery management system and pack evaluated for a failed circuit B switch or internal control fault.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or repair a loose or damaged circuit B harness connection.
  • Repair an open circuit B wire or terminal identified by testing.
  • Replace a failed circuit B balancing switch confirmed by diagnosis.
  • Repair or replace an internal battery-management or pack component if testing confirms the fault is inside the pack.

Can I keep driving?

Use the vehicle only for necessary, shorter trips and avoid heavy loads because power, charging, and electric range may be restricted. If limp mode or a serious battery warning occurs, stop safely and follow the vehicle's guidance; do not access the high-voltage battery.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
