What it means
The coupler unlock control circuit is not operating within expected performance limits. The connector may not release correctly, and charging may be interrupted.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The coupler unlock actuator moves the mechanism that releases the charging connector, while the charger monitors the circuit and actuator response to an unlock command. P0D98 sets when the response falls outside expected performance limits, for example because the actuator is slow or a high-resistance connection reduces its response.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Actuator response slow
- High-resistance contact
Symptoms
- Charge status indicator shows fault
- Charging may not start or interrupts
- Slower-than-expected charge rate
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame and charging data to confirm whether the fault occurs during the unlock command or after charging ends.
- Inspect the connector inlet and lock mechanism for debris, damage, or binding that could prevent smooth release.
- Check the unlock actuator connector and wiring for loose, corroded, or high-resistance contacts.
- Command unlocking through a scan tool, if supported, and observe whether actuator movement is slow or incomplete.
- Measure voltage drop and check actuator response under command using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Remove debris or correct a visible obstruction in the coupler lock mechanism.
- Secure or repair a loose, corroded, or high-resistance connection.
- Repair damaged unlock actuator wiring.
- Replace a slow or binding coupler unlock actuator.
Can I keep driving?
The connector may not release smoothly after charging, so do not force or pry it from the inlet. Use the vehicle's release instructions and avoid relying on the lock until it operates consistently.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
