OBD-II fault code

P0D95: Battery Charger Coupler Unlock Control Circuit/Open

What it means

The coupler unlock control circuit has an open condition. This can prevent the connector from being released, and may interrupt charging.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The coupler unlock actuator releases the charging connector from the vehicle inlet when the vehicle allows it to be removed. The charger monitors the unlock control circuit and sets P0D95 when it detects an open electrical path, so the unlock command may not reach the actuator.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open in actuator control wire
  2. Open lock actuator
  3. Pin pushed back out of connector body

Symptoms

  • Charge status indicator shows fault
  • Charging may not start or interrupts
  • Slower-than-expected charge rate

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame and charging data to determine whether the fault occurred when the vehicle commanded the coupler to unlock.
  2. End the charging session as directed by the vehicle and inspect the connector, inlet, and lock mechanism for visible damage or obstruction.
  3. Inspect the unlock actuator wiring and connectors for a break, loose connection, corrosion, or a pin pushed back into the connector body.
  4. Use a scan tool, if supported, to command coupler unlocking and check whether the actuator responds.
  5. Test continuity through the unlock control wire and actuator circuit using the manufacturer's procedure to locate the open.

Common fixes

  • Reseat a loose unlock-circuit connector or terminal.
  • Repair a broken unlock actuator control wire.
  • Repair or replace a connector with a pushed-back or damaged pin.
  • Replace the coupler unlock actuator if its internal circuit is open.

Can I keep driving?

The charging connector may remain locked, so do not pull or pry it free. Follow the vehicle manual's release procedure; if the connector or inlet appears damaged, stop using that charging point.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
