What it means
The coupler unlock control circuit voltage is lower than expected. This can prevent the connector from being released, and may interrupt charging.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The coupler unlock actuator releases the charging connector when the vehicle permits removal. The charger monitors voltage on the unlock control circuit and sets P0D96 when it is lower than expected, which can point to a short to ground, an internally shorted actuator, or excessive resistance at a connector.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Wire shorted to ground
- Actuator internal short
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Charge status indicator shows fault
- Charging may not start or interrupts
- Slower-than-expected charge rate
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame and live charging data to confirm the low-voltage reading occurs when the vehicle commands the coupler to unlock.
- With charging ended, inspect the inlet, unlock actuator connector, and wiring for moisture, corrosion, pin damage, or a wire rubbed through to ground.
- Check the connector terminals for corrosion or weak contact that could add resistance to the unlock circuit.
- Use a scan tool, if supported, to command unlocking and observe whether the actuator responds when the circuit reads low.
- Test the unlock circuit for a short to ground and check actuator and connector voltage drop using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded or loose unlock-circuit terminals using an approved repair method.
- Repair wiring that is shorted to ground.
- Replace a damaged connector or terminal causing excessive contact resistance.
- Replace the coupler unlock actuator if it is internally shorted.
Can I keep driving?
The connector may not release after charging, and charging can be interrupted or unavailable. Do not force it free; use the vehicle's manual release instructions if the normal release does not work.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
