What it means
The ECM detects a intermittent/erratic fault on the a/c compressor control module output driver temperature sensor circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The output driver temperature sensor reports heat in the electronics that control the A/C compressor. This code sets when its signal becomes erratic or drops out, preventing the module from tracking output driver temperature consistently; a loose connector, vibration-sensitive contact, or unstable ground can cause it.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor connector not seated
- Noisy ground reference
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
Symptoms
- A/C warning light or check-engine light on
- Air conditioning may work intermittently or be unavailable
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and monitor the output driver temperature reading to identify whether dropouts coincide with compressor operation, vibration, or temperature changes.
- Inspect the sensor connector for incomplete seating, corrosion, or loose pins, and check the nearby harness for chafing.
- Gently move accessible sensor wiring while monitoring live data to look for a signal dropout, keeping clear of moving or high-voltage components.
- Check the sensor ground and reference circuits for unstable connections using the manufacturer's procedure.
- If connections remain stable, test the sensor and compressor control module input as specified by the manufacturer.
Common fixes
- Fully seat and secure the sensor connector.
- Clean corroded terminals and repair loose pins or an unstable ground connection.
- Repair chafed wiring or a connector that loses contact under vibration.
- Replace the sensor or repair the compressor control module only if testing confirms the faulty part.
Can I keep driving?
You can usually drive with the A/C off, but cooling may be intermittent or unavailable. If a hybrid or EV warning appears, follow its instructions and avoid relying on the compressor until the temperature signal is stable.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
