OBD-II fault code

P0D76: A/C Compressor Control Module Output Driver Temperature Sensor Performance

What it means

The ECM detects a performance fault on the a/c compressor control module output driver temperature sensor. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The output driver temperature sensor lets the A/C compressor control module track heat in the electronics that drive the compressor. This code sets when the sensor's response does not match the expected temperature behavior, even if its circuit is connected; drifted or aged sensor characteristics and high-resistance contacts can cause it.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor characteristic drifted
  2. High-resistance contact
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • A/C warning light or check-engine light on
  • Air conditioning may be reduced or unavailable

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare the output driver temperature reading with other available temperature data and the vehicle's operating conditions.
  2. Inspect the sensor connector for corrosion, loose pins, or a high-resistance contact, and check the harness for damage.
  3. Check the sensor circuit connections and continuity using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's procedure, paying particular attention to connector resistance.
  4. Test whether the sensor reading changes plausibly as the compressor control module warms or cools, following the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the circuit is sound but the reading remains outside the expected response, test the sensor and module input against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Clean corroded terminals and restore firm sensor connector contact.
  • Repair wiring or connector resistance that disrupts the temperature signal.
  • Replace the output driver temperature sensor if its response is outside the manufacturer's specification.
  • Repair or replace the compressor control module if its input is confirmed to misread a known-good sensor.

Can I keep driving?

Driving with the A/C off is generally possible, but cooling may be reduced or unavailable. Avoid repeated A/C use while the module cannot assess output driver temperature reliably, and heed any hybrid or EV system warning.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
