What it means
The ECM detects a circuit fault on the a/c compressor control module output driver temperature sensor circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The A/C compressor control module monitors the temperature of its output driver, the electronics that control power to the compressor. This code sets when the output driver temperature sensor circuit has a fault and its reading cannot be trusted for temperature protection.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor failed
- Wiring or connector fault
Symptoms
- A/C warning light or check-engine light on
- Air conditioning may be reduced or unavailable
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and read any related compressor or hybrid/EV codes to see whether the circuit fault appeared during A/C operation.
- Inspect the output driver temperature sensor connector and accessible wiring for damage, corrosion, loose pins, or a disconnected plug.
- Check the sensor circuit's power, ground, signal, and continuity using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's procedure.
- Test the output driver temperature sensor against the manufacturer's specification to determine whether the sensor itself has failed.
- If the sensor and wiring pass, assess the compressor control module's sensor input using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or secure a loose sensor connector.
- Clean corroded terminals and repair damaged sensor wiring.
- Replace the output driver temperature sensor if it fails the manufacturer's test.
- Repair or replace the compressor control module if its sensor input is confirmed faulty.
Can I keep driving?
The vehicle may be drivable with the A/C off, but compressor operation can be reduced or disabled. If a hybrid or EV warning appears, heed the vehicle's instructions and arrange diagnosis promptly because the fault affects compressor electronics.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
