What it means
The ECM detects a high fault on the a/c compressor control module output driver temperature sensor circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The output driver temperature sensor reports heat in the A/C compressor control module's compressor-driving electronics. This code sets when the sensor circuit reads higher than the module can reliably use, which can happen with a signal short to power, an open sensor, or poor connector contact.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to B+
- Open sensor
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- A/C warning light or check-engine light on
- Air conditioning may be reduced or unavailable
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check live output driver temperature readings to see whether the reported high condition is steady or tied to compressor operation.
- Inspect the output driver temperature sensor connector and wiring for corrosion, loose pins, damage, or contact between the signal wire and a power feed.
- Check the sensor signal circuit for an open or short to power using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's procedure.
- Test the sensor and circuit continuity with power isolated as specified by the manufacturer, comparing results with its specification.
- If the sensor and wiring pass, check the compressor control module connection and input circuit according to the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded or loose sensor connector pins.
- Repair a signal wire shorted to power or an open in the circuit.
- Replace the output driver temperature sensor if it fails the manufacturer's test.
- Repair or replace the compressor control module if its input circuit is confirmed faulty.
Can I keep driving?
The vehicle may be driven with the A/C off, but cooling may be reduced or disabled. Avoid using the compressor until the fault is diagnosed, and heed any hybrid or EV warning because the temperature reading protects the compressor's power electronics.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
