What it means
The ECM detects a intermittent/erratic fault on the a/c compressor motor voltage sensor a circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Voltage sensor A reports the electric A/C compressor motor voltage to the control module. This code sets when the signal becomes erratic or drops in and out, often because of a loose connector, unstable ground reference, or vibration-sensitive contact.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor connector not seated
- Noisy ground reference
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
Symptoms
- A/C warning light may come on
- Air conditioning may cool intermittently
- A/C operation may be limited or disabled
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and graph sensor A voltage live to see whether it jumps or cuts out as the compressor operates.
- Inspect the sensor A connector for incomplete seating, weak terminal grip, corrosion, or signs of movement.
- Examine the harness and ground reference for chafing, loose grounds, or strain that could change with vibration.
- Check the signal, power, and ground circuits for intermittent continuity or voltage drop while gently moving the harness, following the manufacturer’s precautions.
- If the circuit remains stable, test sensor A against the manufacturer’s specification and replace it only if its output is intermittent.
Common fixes
- Fully seat and secure the sensor A connector.
- Clean or replace terminals with poor contact or corrosion.
- Repair chafed wiring or secure the harness to prevent movement.
- Repair a loose or noisy ground connection identified during testing.
- Replace voltage sensor A if it produces erratic output with stable wiring and connections.
Can I keep driving?
Cooling may come and go, and the module may disable the compressor when the signal drops out. Driving is generally possible if the vehicle otherwise behaves normally, but intermittent loss of A/C can affect window clearing, so have the connection fault addressed.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
