What it means
The battery pack cooling fan 2 sense circuit signal is below the expected range. The code does not identify a particular wiring-damage pattern or test procedure.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Battery pack cooling fan 2 provides airflow for the high-voltage battery, and its sense circuit reports fan-speed feedback to the control module. P0D61 sets when the fan 2 feedback signal is below the expected range, which can prevent the module from confirming fan operation.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sense wire shorted to ground
- Tachometer shorted
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and related cooling codes to learn when fan 2's low feedback was detected.
- Check live data for fan 2 commanded state and reported speed, and compare the feedback when the fan is requested to run.
- Inspect the fan 2 sense wire for contact with ground, and check its connector for corrosion, damage, or loose terminals.
- Test the sense circuit for a short to ground and check connector contact resistance using the manufacturer's procedure.
- If wiring and terminals pass, test fan 2 tachometer output and the control-module input against vehicle-specific service information.
Common fixes
- Clean or secure corroded or loose fan 2 sense-circuit terminals.
- Repair a sense wire shorted to ground or otherwise damaged.
- Replace fan 2 if its tachometer output is confirmed shorted or faulty.
- Repair the control-module circuit only if testing identifies a fault there.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid long trips, heavy loads, and hot conditions because ineffective battery cooling can trigger power limits or charging restrictions. If a battery warning or reduced-power mode appears, stop safely and follow the vehicle's guidance.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
