OBD-II fault code

P0D5E: Battery Charger Hybrid/EV System Discharge Time Too Long

What it means

The battery charger hybrid/EV system’s discharge time is longer than expected. The code indicates a discharge-time fault; it does not by itself identify a failed resistor or capacitor.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The on-board charger manages power conversion during charging, and its discharge circuit removes stored electrical energy when the system is switched off. The control module monitors how long that discharge takes; P0D5E sets when it exceeds the expected time, but does not by itself pinpoint a failed component.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Fault in the discharge circuit
  2. Wiring or connection fault

Symptoms

  • Charge status indicator shows fault
  • Charging may not start or interrupts
  • Slower-than-expected charge rate

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and charger-related codes before clearing anything, to see whether the fault occurred during shutdown, charging, or another event.
  2. Check the charge-status display and live charger data for discharge status or timing information, if the scan tool provides it.
  3. With the vehicle powered down according to the manufacturer's safety procedure, visually inspect accessible charger discharge-circuit wiring and connectors for damage, looseness, or corrosion.
  4. Check the discharge circuit connections and wiring for continuity or unwanted resistance using the manufacturer's procedure and specification.
  5. If the wiring and connections pass, have the charger control system tested for an internal discharge-circuit fault using the vehicle-specific service procedure.

Common fixes

  • Clean, reseat, or secure a loose charger-circuit connector.
  • Repair damaged wiring or corroded terminals in the discharge circuit.
  • Replace a confirmed faulty discharge-circuit component.
  • Repair or replace the charger control module only if vehicle-specific testing confirms its failure.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid relying on the vehicle for routine travel if charging is interrupted or unavailable; arrange a safe alternative before the battery runs low. Do not handle high-voltage charger components, and stop charging if the system reports a fault or abnormal heating.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
