What it means
The ECM detects a range/performance fault on the battery charger hybrid/ev battery output current sensor circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The battery charger’s hybrid/EV battery output current sensor reports the current leaving the charger to the control module. This code sets when that reading is outside the expected range or fails to track operation as expected, rather than simply registering a low or high signal.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Faulty current sensor
- Damaged wiring or connector
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and check charger status and output current readings for the conditions that triggered the range/performance fault.
- Inspect the output current sensor connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, loose pins, or moisture.
- Compare reported current with charger operation and other available charging data to look for an implausible or unresponsive reading.
- Test the sensor signal circuit for continuity, shorts, and poor connections using the manufacturer's procedure.
- Check sensor response against the manufacturer's specifications and rule out wiring faults before replacing the sensor.
Common fixes
- Secure the current sensor connector and clean corroded terminals.
- Repair damaged wiring or poor connections in the output current sensor circuit.
- Replace the battery output current sensor if it fails the specified range/performance test.
Can I keep driving?
Charging may be slowed or fail, and reduced power or limp mode can restrict driving; confirm charging and available electric range before relying on the vehicle. Stop safely if propulsion power is too limited for safe traffic flow.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
