OBD-II fault code

P0D53: Battery Charger Hybrid/EV Battery Output Current Sensor Circuit Low

What it means

The ECM detects a low fault on the battery charger hybrid/ev battery output current sensor circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The battery charger’s hybrid/EV battery output current sensor reports charger output current to the control module. This code sets when the signal is lower than the module expects, which can result from a signal short to ground, a sensor fault, or an open or high-resistance connection.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal circuit short to ground
  2. Faulty current sensor
  3. Open or high-resistance wiring or connector

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check charger status and reported battery output current to confirm the low signal condition.
  2. Inspect the current sensor connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, loose terminals, or a signal wire contacting ground.
  3. Test the signal circuit for a short to ground and check for an open or high resistance using the manufacturer's procedure.
  4. Compare the current sensor output and circuit behavior with the manufacturer's specifications.
  5. Repair any short, open, or resistive connection found, then retest before replacing the sensor.

Common fixes

  • Repair a signal wire shorted to ground.
  • Repair an open or high-resistance connection and clean or replace corroded terminals.
  • Replace the battery output current sensor if it fails the specified test.

Can I keep driving?

Charging may be slowed or unavailable, and reduced power or limp mode may limit driving; avoid trips that depend on normal charging or electric range. Stop safely if reduced propulsion power makes the vehicle difficult to drive safely.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
