OBD-II fault code

P0D2A: Battery Charger Input Current Too High

What it means

The battery charger monitors the current drawn at its input during charging. It sets this code when input current exceeds the expected range.

How it works

The battery charger monitors current drawn through its input circuit during charging. P0D2A sets when input current exceeds the expected range, and the charger may reduce or stop charging to protect the circuit.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Battery charger or input circuit fault
  2. Supply or charging connection fault

Symptoms

  • Charge status indicator shows fault
  • Charging may not start or interrupts
  • Slower-than-expected charge rate

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame and live input-current data to identify when the current rose above the expected range and what the charger was doing.
  2. Stop charging and inspect the plug, inlet, and accessible input wiring for heat damage, contamination, damaged insulation, or a poor connection.
  3. Check for related input-voltage and charger codes that may indicate a supply or circuit problem.
  4. If safe and available, compare the vehicle's behaviour on another suitable charging supply to see whether the fault is supply-specific.
  5. Have input current and charger operation tested using the manufacturer's procedure and specification.

Common fixes

  • Stop using a charging supply confirmed to cause excessive input current.
  • Repair damaged input wiring or replace a damaged connector or terminal.
  • Correct a faulty charging connection identified during inspection.
  • Replace the charger if testing confirms an internal input-circuit fault.

Can I keep driving?

Stop the charging session if the vehicle reports excessive input current, especially if the plug or inlet is warm or damaged. Do not keep retrying on the same connection; continued excessive current may damage the input circuit or create a heat hazard.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
