OBD-II fault code

P0C82: Hybrid/EV Battery Temperature Sensor H Range/Performance

What it means

The HV battery temperature sensor H reports a range/performance fault. Cell-group temperature monitoring impaired on this channel.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The HV battery management system uses temperature sensor H to track the temperature of its assigned cell group. It sets P0C82 when sensor H's reading is outside the expected range or does not respond as expected, even though the fault is not specifically identified as a low or high circuit signal.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor characteristic drifted
  2. Sensor mounting displaced
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool that can read hybrid battery data to record freeze-frame information and compare sensor H's temperature with nearby battery sensors and ambient conditions.
  2. Check whether sensor H's reported temperature changes smoothly during a vehicle state change, such as charging or a controlled warm-up, and look for implausible jumps or lag.
  3. With the high-voltage system made safe according to the manufacturer's procedure, inspect sensor H's mounting and its connector and wiring for displacement, damage, or corrosion.
  4. Check sensor H and its circuit using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure, comparing its response with the specified temperature-sensor characteristics.
  5. If sensor H and its wiring pass, compare readings across the relevant cell groups and check for evidence of a pack temperature or cell-balance issue before clearing the code.

Common fixes

  • Reseat sensor H in its specified position if it has shifted.
  • Clean or repair a corroded or damaged sensor H connector or wiring connection.
  • Replace sensor H if its response has drifted outside the manufacturer's specification.
  • Repair any confirmed battery-pack condition affecting the monitored cell group.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid charging or driving hard while the hybrid system warning or reduced-power mode is active, because the battery controller may not be able to manage the affected cell group's temperature reliably. Stop if power drops significantly or the vehicle displays a battery-temperature warning, and arrange prompt diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
