OBD-II fault code

P0C5E: Drive Motor A Position Sensor Circuit B Intermittent/Erratic

What it means

The position sensor channel B of drive motor A reports a circuit intermittent/erratic fault. Phase commutation feedback impaired on this channel.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Drive Motor A's position sensor channel B provides rotor-position feedback for motor phase control. P0C5E sets when the module sees channel B drop out or vary erratically instead of giving a stable signal, often because of a loose connection or unstable ground.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Connector not seated
  2. Noisy ground reference
  3. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced motor power or torque
  • Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and related hybrid or EV codes to learn whether the channel B fault occurred at a particular motor speed, load, or vibration condition.
  2. Watch live Drive Motor A channel B data for dropouts or sudden changes while the vehicle is checked under the manufacturer's procedure.
  3. With the vehicle powered down according to the manufacturer's safety procedure, check that the channel B connector is fully seated and inspect its terminals for looseness or corrosion.
  4. Inspect the channel B harness and ground connections for movement, chafing, strain, or damage that could cause intermittent contact.
  5. If the fault cannot be found visually, test the channel B signal and ground circuits for intermittent continuity using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Fully seat and secure the Drive Motor A channel B connector.
  • Clean or repair loose or corroded connector terminals.
  • Repair damaged channel B wiring or a poor ground connection.
  • Replace the sensor if channel B continues to drop out despite sound wiring and connections.

Can I keep driving?

An intermittent position signal can cause sudden torque reduction, limp mode, or shutdown, so avoid driving where an unexpected loss of propulsion could create danger. If the fault recurs or power cuts out, stop safely and arrange repair.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
