OBD-II fault code

P0C54: Drive Motor 'A' Position Sensor Circuit 'A' Intermittent/Erratic

What it means

The control module monitors circuit A of drive motor A’s position sensor for a stable, plausible signal. It sets this code when the signal is intermittent or changes erratically.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Drive Motor A's position sensor sends rotor-position feedback on circuit A, and the hybrid or EV control module checks that the signal remains stable and plausible. This code sets when the signal drops out or changes erratically, often because of a loose connection, unstable ground, or vibration-sensitive contact.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Connector not seated
  2. Noisy ground reference
  3. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced motor power or torque
  • Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and related codes, noting whether the fault occurred during acceleration, vibration, or a change in motor load.
  2. With the vehicle powered down using the manufacturer's safety procedure, inspect Drive Motor A's connector for an incomplete latch, loose pins, corrosion, or signs of movement.
  3. Inspect the circuit A harness and ground connections for chafing, strain, or poor attachment near the motor.
  4. Monitor the sensor signal with a scan tool under the manufacturer's approved test conditions and check whether it drops out as the harness or connector is gently moved.
  5. If the connections remain sound, test the sensor and ground reference for intermittent faults using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Fully seat and secure Drive Motor A's sensor connector.
  • Repair loose, corroded, or damaged terminals in circuit A.
  • Repair or secure harness sections that move, chafe, or strain the connection.
  • Restore a stable ground reference or replace the position sensor if testing confirms an intermittent internal fault.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving if the warning is accompanied by reduced power, and stop safely if the vehicle's motor response cuts in and out or shutdown seems possible. The intermittent feedback can make drive power unpredictable.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
