OBD-II fault code

P0C5D: Drive Motor A Position Sensor Circuit B High

What it means

The position sensor channel B of drive motor A reports a circuit high fault. Phase commutation feedback impaired on this channel.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Drive Motor A's position sensor channel B reports rotor position to the module that controls motor commutation. P0C5D sets when channel B stays higher than the expected signal range, such as from a short to battery voltage, an open sensor, or a poor connector contact.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to B+
  2. Open sensor
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced motor power or torque
  • Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and related hybrid or EV codes to see when the Drive Motor A channel B high signal was detected.
  2. Check live channel B data and compare it with other available Drive Motor A position data to verify the high condition.
  3. With the vehicle powered down according to the manufacturer's safety procedure, inspect channel B wiring and the sensor connector for damage, loose pins, corrosion, or contact with a power wire.
  4. Test the channel B signal circuit for an open or short to battery voltage using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If wiring and connector tests pass, test the Drive Motor A sensor channel B circuit against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Repair channel B wiring shorted to a power supply.
  • Repair an open or damaged section of the channel B signal circuit.
  • Clean or repair corroded, loose, or damaged sensor connector terminals.
  • Replace the Drive Motor A position sensor if it is open or fails the specified test.

Can I keep driving?

The high signal can disrupt motor commutation and result in reduced torque, limp mode, or shutdown. Avoid trips where a sudden loss of propulsion would be dangerous, and stop safely if the vehicle's power becomes unreliable.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
