What it means
The control circuit of the HV battery positive contactor reports a control circuit range/performance condition. HV main switching cannot be commanded reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The positive contactor switches the high-voltage battery pack's positive connection to the vehicle, and its control circuit operates and monitors that switch. P0ADA sets when the circuit or contactor response is outside the expected range or timing, which can result from coil drift or resistance in a connection.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Coil resistance drifted
- High-resistance contact
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and related contactor codes to see whether the abnormal response occurred during startup, driving, or charging.
- Observe positive contactor command and status data with a capable scan tool to check whether the reported response follows the command.
- Follow high-voltage safety procedures and inspect the positive contactor control connector and accessible wiring for corrosion, looseness, or damage.
- Test the positive contactor coil and control circuit using the manufacturer's procedure, checking for resistance or voltage drop outside specification.
- If the wiring and coil pass, evaluate the control module output and contactor operation with the manufacturer's diagnostic process.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure a high-resistance positive contactor connector connection.
- Repair damaged or resistive control-circuit wiring.
- Replace the positive contactor if its coil or response is outside specification.
- Repair the control connection or module fault confirmed by testing.
Can I keep driving?
If the vehicle has trouble entering READY mode, loses propulsion, or limits charging, do not continue a journey that depends on it; the positive contactor may not switch the high-voltage pack reliably. Keep clear of high-voltage components and arrange qualified hybrid service.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
