What it means
The control module detects a fault in the hybrid/EV battery positive contactor circuit.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The positive contactor is a high-voltage switch that connects the battery’s positive side to the vehicle’s drive system when operation is allowed. The control module monitors the contactor’s coil circuit and switching response; this code sets when that circuit does not behave as expected, without specifying that the contactor is stuck open.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Contactor coil open
- Wiring fault
Symptoms
- Check-engine or hybrid-system warning light
- Hybrid system may not start or operate
- Reduced or unavailable electric drive
How to diagnose it
- Read all hybrid-system codes and freeze-frame data first to see whether the positive contactor fault occurred with related battery or contactor codes.
- Check whether the vehicle enters its ready state and note any message about high-voltage system operation.
- With the vehicle safely powered down according to its service information, inspect the positive contactor circuit connectors and accessible wiring for damage, corrosion, looseness, or signs of overheating.
- Use scan-tool data to compare the commanded positive contactor state with the reported state during the manufacturer-prescribed check.
- Have a qualified hybrid technician test the positive contactor coil and its control circuit against the manufacturer's specification; do not probe high-voltage terminals.
- If the coil and wiring pass, follow the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure to check the controlling module and contactor feedback.
Common fixes
- Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged positive-contactor circuit connector.
- Repair damaged wiring in the positive contactor control circuit.
- Replace the positive contactor if its coil or switching response fails the manufacturer's tests.
- Repair or replace the control module only if its outputs or feedback handling fail the specified checks.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid relying on the vehicle for normal trips if hybrid operation is reduced or unavailable; it may fail to enter ready mode or lose electric drive. Because this involves high-voltage equipment, arrange diagnosis by a qualified hybrid technician.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
