OBD-II fault code

P0AD9: Hybrid/EV Battery Positive Contactor Control Circuit/Open

What it means

The control circuit of the HV battery positive contactor reports a control circuit/open condition. HV main switching cannot be commanded reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The high-voltage battery's positive contactor is a switch that connects the pack's positive side to the vehicle's high-voltage system when commanded. P0AD9 sets when the control module detects an open condition in the positive contactor control circuit, so it may not be able to operate that switch reliably.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open in coil control wire
  2. Open contactor coil
  3. Pin pushed back out of connector body

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and related hybrid system codes to determine whether the fault appeared during startup, driving, or charging.
  2. Follow the vehicle's high-voltage safety procedures before inspecting the positive contactor control connector or wiring.
  3. Inspect the accessible control harness and connector for a disconnected plug, backed-out pin, corrosion, or visible wire damage.
  4. Test the positive contactor coil and control wiring for continuity according to the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If continuity is present, check the module's control output and circuit behavior using the manufacturer's diagnostic process.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect and secure a loose positive contactor control connector.
  • Repair a broken wire or backed-out terminal in the control circuit.
  • Replace the positive contactor if its coil has an open circuit.
  • Repair the control circuit or module connection identified by the prescribed test.

Can I keep driving?

Do not rely on the vehicle for continued travel if it will not enter READY mode, loses propulsion, or shows a high-voltage system warning; the positive contactor may not connect the battery reliably. Do not open or probe high-voltage components yourself; arrange qualified hybrid service.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
