What it means
The current sensor A of the 14V DC/DC converter module reports a circuit range/performance fault. 12V system current measurement is unreliable.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Current sensor A in the 14-volt power module measures current through the DC/DC converter's 12-volt supply system. The module checks whether that reading changes plausibly as operating conditions and electrical loads change. P0A87 sets when the sensor's response is outside the expected range or performance window, even if the circuit is not simply open or shorted.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Current sensor failed
- Wiring fault
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check-engine or hybrid-system warning light
- 12-volt charging warning light
- Weak or discharged 12-volt battery
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare current sensor A live readings with DC/DC converter operation and 12-volt electrical loads.
- Check the 12-volt battery and charging status to rule out a supply problem that could distort the sensor's reported performance.
- Inspect current sensor A wiring and connectors for damage, corrosion, loose pins, or poor connections.
- Test the sensor circuit and compare its signal with actual system current using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
- If the wiring is sound, test current sensor A for drift or failure and verify the 14-volt power module operation to the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Clean, reseat, or repair a poor current sensor A connector.
- Repair damaged wiring or circuit connections.
- Replace current sensor A if its output is outside the manufacturer's specification.
- Repair or replace the 14-volt power module if it fails the specified tests.
Can I keep driving?
If the 12-volt charging warning appears or the battery is weakening, keep driving to a minimum because the vehicle could lose electrical power or fail to restart. Avoid relying on the vehicle for a long trip until the charging system and sensor fault are diagnosed.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
