OBD-II fault code

P0A56: Drive Motor B Current Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The current sensor of the drive motor B reports a circuit range/performance fault. Current measurement is unreliable.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Drive Motor B's current sensor measures current for inverter torque control, and the hybrid control system checks whether its readings remain plausible as the motor operates. This code sets when the sensor output is outside its expected range or does not track current as expected, rather than simply being too low or too high. Sensor offset drift, aging, or nearby magnetic interference can make the reading inaccurate.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Current sensor offset drifted
  2. Magnetic offset from nearby parts
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced motor power or torque
  • Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare Drive Motor B's reported current with commanded torque and motor operation for an implausible offset or inconsistent change.
  2. Check for related inverter or hybrid-system codes that may help distinguish a sensor calibration issue from a wider control fault.
  3. With the high-voltage system made safe according to service information, inspect Drive Motor B's current sensor, connector, and nearby components for damage, corrosion, or magnetic interference.
  4. Inspect the sensor wiring and its power and ground connections for damage or poor contact, then check them against the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the circuit and installation appear sound, test the sensor output across operating conditions using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Correct the sensor mounting or nearby magnetic interference if inspection identifies a problem.
  • Repair damaged wiring or poor connections in Drive Motor B's current-sensor circuit.
  • Clean and secure the sensor connector and terminals.
  • Replace Drive Motor B's current sensor if its offset or output remains outside the manufacturer's specification.
  • Repair an inverter fault if testing shows it is causing the implausible current reading.

Can I keep driving?

The hybrid system may limit torque or enter reduced-power mode, so avoid demanding acceleration and long trips until the fault is diagnosed. Stop safely if power becomes unreliable or a shutdown warning appears.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
