What it means
The drive motor B temperature sensor circuit signal is above the expected range. The code identifies a high circuit signal; the specific cause depends on the vehicle.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Drive motor B's temperature sensor sends a signal used by the hybrid control system to assess motor heat. P0A33 is set when the signal rises above its expected range, often because the signal circuit is pulled high or the sensor circuit is open.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to B+
- Open sensor
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced motor power or torque
- Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and live drive motor B temperature; check whether the reported value is implausibly high or fixed compared with other temperatures.
- Power down the vehicle using the manufacturer's high-voltage safety procedure, then inspect the drive motor B sensor connector and harness for an open, damage, corrosion, or contact with a power feed.
- Using the wiring diagram, check the signal circuit for a short to B+ and check continuity through the sensor circuit as directed by the manufacturer's procedure.
- Test the temperature sensor and connector terminals against the manufacturer's specification to identify an open sensor or high-resistance connection.
- After repair, clear the code and confirm that drive motor B temperature changes plausibly on the scan tool.
Common fixes
- Repair a signal wire shorted to B+ or a damaged harness near drive motor B.
- Clean or repair corroded, loose, or spread terminals at the sensor connector.
- Replace the drive motor B temperature sensor if it is open or outside the manufacturer's specification.
- Restore an open circuit connection, then verify the live temperature reading.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving because the hybrid system may reduce motor torque or enter limp mode when drive motor B temperature cannot be measured reliably. Avoid demanding acceleration; if a reduced-power warning appears or propulsion becomes unpredictable, stop safely and arrange service.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
