OBD-II fault code

P0A2C: Drive Motor A Temperature Sensor Circuit Low

What it means

Voltage at motor A temperature sensor below threshold, suggesting short to ground. The drive motor's position, current and temperature are watched continuously; a fault here downgrades the inverter to a safe operating point or triggers torque reduction.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The Drive Motor A temperature sensor circuit carries the sensor signal used to monitor motor winding heat. P0A2C sets when the signal voltage falls below the permitted range, commonly pointing to a short to ground or a damaged connection.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Short to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced motor power or torque
  • Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and inspect Drive Motor A temperature live data for a low or implausible reading.
  2. Following the manufacturer's power-down procedure, inspect the Drive Motor A sensor harness for chafing, crushed insulation, or contact with ground.
  3. Inspect sensor connector pins for corrosion, damage, or poor contact.
  4. Test the signal circuit for a short to ground and check continuity using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the wiring is intact, test the sensor output against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Repair chafed Drive Motor A sensor wiring and protect it from further contact.
  • Clean or repair corroded sensor connector pins.
  • Repair a signal wire shorted to ground.
  • Replace the sensor if its output remains below specification with a sound circuit.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving and avoid high motor load because the system may reduce torque when it cannot reliably track Drive Motor A temperature. Stop if power becomes severely limited or the vehicle warns of shutdown.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
