What it means
Electrical fault on the temperature sensor inside drive motor A windings. The sensor is used to derate motor torque when winding temperature approaches the insulation limit.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Drive Motor A has a temperature sensor circuit that lets the control module monitor winding temperature and protect the motor. P0A2A sets when the module detects an electrical fault in that sensor circuit, so it may not receive a reliable temperature reading.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor failed
- Wiring fault
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced motor power or torque
- Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check Drive Motor A temperature data for a missing, fixed, or implausible reading.
- Power down the vehicle using the manufacturer's procedure, then inspect the Drive Motor A sensor wiring and connectors for damage, looseness, or corrosion.
- Check the sensor circuit for continuity and shorts using the manufacturer's test procedure.
- Compare sensor and circuit measurements with the manufacturer's specification to determine whether the fault is in the wiring or sensor.
- If the sensor circuit tests correctly, check the associated control-module connections and input.
Common fixes
- Reconnect a loose Drive Motor A temperature sensor connector.
- Clean corroded pins or repair damaged sensor wiring.
- Replace the Drive Motor A temperature sensor if its circuit tests out of specification.
- Repair the control-module connection or input if testing isolates the fault there.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving, especially hard acceleration, because the system may reduce motor torque or shut the vehicle down if it cannot monitor Drive Motor A temperature. Stop if power drops or a hybrid/EV warning appears.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
